Q: What anti-virus software do you recommend?
A: We recommended SOPHOS to our clients in the past due to how fast they could identify new viruses and provide definitions for the anti-virus. Their updates were done by manual download by checking their website constantly which many of our clients found difficult to keep up to date. We then tested Avast against Norton and AVG and found that Avast provided better protection than AVG and Norton. We recommended Avast to residential users who wanted auto-update functionality that SOPHOS did not have at the time. There were viruses that used Norton Live Update to update viruses and SOPHOS was more secure due to its manual-only updates. This has changed and SOPHOS now offers automatic updates. We currently recommend SOPHOS anti-virus.
Q: Should I upgrade to Windows 10?
A: Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 which makes it an outdated security issue. Windows 8.1 is still supported and does not force you to have Cortana, which is an irremovable part of Windows 10. Cortana randomly uses up to 100% of CPU resources and can slow down other applications during these times. The choice is really yours but you could upgrade to Windows 8.1 and use that until it has reached its end of life, then upgrade to Windows 10.
